Dr. Edward B. Shils

The Shils Legacy

For decades, Dr. Edward B. Shils was a driving force in American business and in the oral health community. He held active positions as Executive Director of the Dental Manufacturers of America and Dental Dealers of America for over 50 years.

He founded the first center for Entrepreneurial Research and Teaching at the University of Pennsylvania’s Wharton School and earned six degrees in his nearly 70 years at the university.

No matter what he was working on at the time, it was passion that drove Dr. Shils: passion to excel, passion to create and passion to motivate. His insights and directives ultimately changed the landscape of the industry and impacted the future of thousands of students, businesspersons and hopeful entrepreneurs who would continue his legacy. His mentorship, sage advice and belief in the individual’s potential encouraged all those he touched to go further, compete harder and burn more brightly than ever before.

Dr. Shils’ legacy continues through the remarkable contributions he made during his lifetime, through the endeavors of his friends and colleagues and through the Shils Fund and its innovative grants and joint initiatives.

It is remarkable that today—more than ten years since Ed Shils’ passing—his teaching and work continue to be a common topic of conversation, and he remains a role model for so many dental industry leaders in how they approach and execute their business. Without question, Ed is still very much alive in our thoughts and in our hearts.
