Steven Kess, M.B.A.

Steven William Kess, M.B.A., is widely recognized for his critical insight and ability to synthesize public and private coalitions, as well as business and public policy issues. He is both an entrepreneur and an executive. Mr. Kess is Vice President of Global Professional Relations, Office of the Chairman & CEO, for Henry Schein, Inc., a Fortune 250 global health care distribution company, where he was instrumental in developing Henry Schein Cares, its corporate social responsibility program. Mr. Kess is the founding President of the Henry Schein Cares Foundation. 

An advocate for underrepresented minorities, Mr. Kess has been particularly active in the area of diversity and access to health care for at risk populations.   He has served in a variety of leadership roles in many health care associations, organizations, and trade associations. He currently is the Chairman of the Dean’s Advisory Board of Harvard University School of Dental Medicine.  Mr. Kess was recently installed as President of the Santa Fe Group, a not-for-profit oral health think tank that he has been a member of for more than two decades.  He is President of the Dr. Edward B. Shils Entrepreneurial Fund, Inc. and serves on the Boards at Columbia University College of Dental Medicine, University of North Carolina School of Dentistry, University of Michigan School of Dentistry, Al Quds University Dental School, Tel Aviv University School of Dental Medicine, Temple University Kornberg School of Dentistry, Alliance for Oral Health Across Borders and Project Accessible Oral Health.

In addition, Mr. Kess has served on the strategic planning group for the American Veterinary Medical Association Vision 2020 and FDI’s Vision 2020 Program Task Force for developing its strategic plan and defining the explanation of oral health. 

Mr. Kess has been married for 52 years and lives in New York City with his wife, Sharon.  They have one daughter, Meredith Millen and two grandchildren, Benjamin and Alexandra.

Allen Finkelstein

Allen L. Finkelstein, DDS, the Chief Executive Officer of Bedford HealthCare Solutions is the former Chief Dental Officer of AmeriChoice/United Health Group.

Dr. Finkelstein an undergrad from the University of Pittsburgh and obtained his graduate degree from Temple University School of Dentistry in Philadelphia. In 2009, Dr. Finkelstein was awarded a Doctor of Humane Letters degree from the A.T. Still University (Hon) and in 2011 was awarded the Dr. Harry Strusser Memorial Award from New York University, College of Dentistry. Dr. Finkelstein is a member of the American Dental Association, the Essex County Dental Association and the dental associations of the States of New Jersey, New York and Rhode Island.

Among many other organizational engagements, Dr. Finkelstein is the former President of the Rockland County Dental Society, former Trustee of the Ninth District Dental Society of the State of New York, former member of New York University College of Dentistry Admission Committee and former Trustee of the Alpha Omega International Dental Fraternity.

He is a longtime proponent of Integrated Dental and Medical Care and has lectured at dental and medical schools and conferences on the subject of Early Childhood Caries and the need for Medical/Dental Integration to achieve the establishment of a quality outcome based Health Home.

Dr. Finkelstein has passed the National Dental Boards, North East Regional Boards, and is licensed to practice dentistry in New York and New Jersey. He currently maintains a dental practice, specializing in Periodontal Prosthesis located in Great Neck, New York. In Addition, Dr. Finkelstein has been active in many community activities both philanthropies and dental outreach programs for the underserved.


Keith Drayer

Keith D. Drayer, MBA, serves as Vice President and General Manager of Henry Schein’s Schools and Specialty Services global businesses. He leads nearly 200 professional team members across a portfolio of businesses including dental practice brokerage, dental practice staffing, dental schools’ sales, and dental student engagement.  Under Keith’s leadership, Henry Schein’s dental brokerages businesses, operating in eight countries, have become the leading global transitions firms.

Keith is an active contributor to industry and philanthropic groups.  He holds several elected and appointed leadership positions. He serves on the Long Island Capital Alliance, Dental School Dean’s Board of the College of Dental Medicine at Nova Southeastern University, the University of North Carolina Adams School of Dentistry and the University of Kentucky College of Dentistry.  Keith is an Alpha Omega International Dental Society Board Member, the Dr. Shils Entrepreneurial Education Fund Treasurer, American Jewish Committee – Long Island Region’s Immediate Past President, Vice President of American Friends of Dental Volunteers for Israel (DVI) and Tivnu Social Justice Gap Year Program Board Member.

Keith has been interviewed by CBS Radio, Crain’s Business and Kiplinger’s Personal Finance and has been a keynote speaker at several industry meetings.  He lectures at dental schools globally and was a practice development instructor at New York University’s Dental School Continuing Education program.  Keith co-led two volunteer dental outreach programs to Songea, Tanzania.

Keith is an active marathon runner, Ironman triathlete and has trekked various mountain ranges in N. America, S. America, Africa and Asia.

Henry leads Exponent Philanthropy, a vibrant membership organization that amplifies and celebrates the vital work of philanthropists who give big while keeping their operations lean. As CEO since 2011, he brings a firsthand understanding of the needs of philanthropists with few or no staff and a wealth of experience managing people, projects, and budgets in the nonprofit and for-profit sectors.

Recognizing that funders are increasingly using a variety of giving vehicles, in 2014 Henry led the organization through a strategic rebrand from the Association of Small Foundations. His current focus is on ensuring all members—public, private, and community foundations, philanthropic families, and individual donors—connect with others in the organization’s nationwide network, engage with a wide range of resources, and participate in high-quality and cost-effective programming.

Before joining Exponent Philanthropy, Henry had a long career in educational media and technology. He is a founding board member of the Museum of Broadcast Technology and also currently serves on the boards of the National Council of Nonprofits and the Dr. Edward B. Shils Entrepreneurial Fund

Henry earned a bachelor’s degree in communications from Ithaca College, a master’s and doctorate in education from Boston University, and a certificate in business and management from the Harvard University Extension School, where he also taught classes in fundraising, development communications and philanthropy. He has also taught at Columbia University and Boston University.

Lawrence Caplin

Oral Health Impact Project

Dr. Caplin, Owner and CEO, is a national leader on public health issues stemming from lack of access to dental care in the United States. In addition to his clinical expertise, Dr. Caplin has the ability to craft and implement solutions for a variety of programs. Over the past 25 years, he has created and operationalized customized solutions for the Buckley Air Force Base; the Army National Guard in various states across the country; Adult and Juvenile Justice Systems throughout 7 States; the foster care system for the City of New York and for various other governmental institutions facing quality and access to care issues. He is also working successfully to improve the dental health of families and individuals in minority communities, and for underserved children in approximately 300 schools in the Philadelphia, Baltimore and Camden School Districts in addition to the Archdioceses schools throughout the Mid Atlantic United States through the award winning Oral Health Impact Project (OHIP). OHIP was founded in 2006 by Dr. Caplin and brings high quality, in-school dental care and long term dental health to children at the greatest risk for dental disease. As Founder and CEO of Dentrust Optimized Care Solutions (DOCS), Dr. Caplin has committed his life’s work to providing healthcare services to our Military servicemen and women, as well as for other diverse and underserved populations. Dr. Caplin will continue his mission serving the healthcare needs of these individuals for years to come.

Lois K. Cohen, Ph.D.
National Institute of Dental and Craniofacial Research

Lois K. Cohen, PhD serves as a consultant & Paul G. Rogers Ambassador for Global Health Research since her retirement from U.S. government service in 2006. She is a sociologist whose research and health science administration career included service as the Director of Extramural Research, Associate Director for International Health and Director of the WHO Collaborating Center for Dental, Oral & Craniofacial Research and Training, National Institute of Dental & Craniofacial Research, National Institutes of Health, Bethesda, MD. Having authored more than 150 articles in peer-reviewed journals and edited four books on the social sciences and dentistry, she co-directed the WHO International Collaborative Studies of Oral Health Systems.

Having served on several journal boards among them the Journal of the American Dental Association, she co-chairs the Friends of the Organization for Safety, Asepsis and Prevention, and serves on the boards of the Alliance for Oral Health Across Borders, the Edw. B. Shils Entrepreneurial Fund, the Global Advisory Council of the Regulatory Affairs Professional Society, and the Caplin Family Charities. She provides consultation to the NIH, the World Health Organization and its regional offices in Africa and the Americas, the Canadian Institutes for Health Research, various universities and professional associations including the American Dental Association, the FDI World Dental Federation, the American Dental Education Association and others in the area of global health through oral health. Lectures and awards in her honor are presented annually at the University of the Sciences in Philadelphia, PA and Harvard University’s School of Dental Medicine in Boston, MA and at the International Association of Dental Research’s Behavioral, Epidemiological and Health Services Research Group.

Teresa A. Dolan, DDS, MPH
Vice President & Chief Clinical Officer, Dentsply Sirona

Dr. Teresa Dolan is Vice President and Chief Clinical Officer at Dentsply Sirona and leads the global  Clinical Affairs function, supports new product development and oversees the largest global clinical education program sponsored by dental industry. Dr. Dolan joined Dentsply Sirona after serving as professor and dean of the University of Florida College of Dentistry from 2003 until 2013. As chief academic officer, she managed a $62M operating budget, with $13.7M in research funding and revenue from more than 100,000 annual patient visits. She is recognized for her contributions to dental public health, geriatric dentistry and as a champion for diversity and women in dentistry. Dr. Dolan is a Phi Beta Kappa graduate of Rutgers University; she earned a DDS degree from the University of Texas and a MPH degree from the University of California, Los Angeles. She was a Robert Wood Johnson Foundation Dental Health Services Research Scholar, completed a Veterans Administration Fellowship in Geriatric Dentistry, and is a board certified in Dental Public Health.

Leslie E. Grant, DDS, MSPA
National Dental Association

Dr. Leslie E. Grant is a native of Charlotte, North Carolina, and graduated high school in Gary, Indiana. She received a Bachelor of Science Degree, Cum Laude from Boston University and a Master of Speech Pathology and Audiology Degree from the University of Washington in Seattle. Dr. Grant obtained her Doctor of Dental Surgery Degree in 1986, and completed a General Practice Residency at Saint Joseph’s Hospital in Paterson, New Jersey in 1987.

Dr. Grant provided dental care in her private practice in Baltimore for more than twenty years.  She is a former Chief Dental Officer for the Maryland State Board of Dental Examiners and is currently an examiner for the Commission on Dental Competency Assessment (CDCA). She is a Past President of the National Dental Association and a former Board Chair of the Organization for Safety, Asepsis and Prevention (OSAP).

Dr. Grant is a member of the NDA, ADA, American Association of Women Dentists (AAWD), and a Fellow in both the American College of Dentists and the International College of Dentists. In 2006 she was named as one of the “One Hundred + Most Influential African Americans” by Ebony Magazine, and was named as one of Maryland’s “Top 100 Women for 2015”. AAWD presented her with the Lucy Hobbs Taylor Award in 2018. Dr. Grant is a Life Member of the NAACP and the American Speech, Language, Hearing Association. She serves on the Community Impact and the Governance Committees of the Dr. Edward Shils Entrepreneurial Fund Board of Directors.

Alyse O’Kelly, DMD
Dental Innovators, Creators Entrepreneurs (DICE)

Alyse O’Kelly completed her pre-doctoral training at The University of Pennsylvania in May 2020 where she earned her Doctorate of Medicine in Dentistry. During her time at Penn Dental, she co-founded the first student-led oral health focused incubator called Dental Innovators, Creators and Entrepreneurs (DICE). She created this organization to support dental students in their pursuit of problem-solving and designing of businesses that address unmet needs in dentistry.  To compliment these efforts, DICE holds a pitch competition and solicits resources to advance students’ start-up projects.  Her undergraduate degree in business and experience as an entrepreneur motivated her to start DICE that has since expanded to other dental schools in the Northeast region.  Upon graduation, Alyse will work in private practice and continue to work with The Shils Fund to pursue her goal of expanding DICE nationally.

Paul MondockPaul Mondock

A 30+ year veteran of Septodont, Paul has held numerous roles with increasing responsibility. He currently serves as President for the Americas, with P&L responsibilities for North, South, and Central America. He is also Chairman of Septodont’s North American Executive Committee and serves as a member of the corporate Executive Management Committee.In addition to his company responsibilities Paul is also involved at the Board level with multiple industry related non-profit organizations.Paul received his BS in Business Management from the University of Pittsburgh and his MBA from Temple University’s Fox School of Business.

Anthony MontemurroAnthony Montemurro
Past President of the Dental Manufacturers of America

Tony has been involved as an executive in the dental industry for over 35 years and is a Past President of the Dental Manufacturers of America, where he enjoyed a close association with Dr. Shils for many years. He is also a former Chairperson of the American Dental Trade Association’s Manufacturer’s Section and World Trade Committees. Tony is retired and is an active volunteer in local community affairs. He currently serves as Treasurer of the Doylestown, PA Fire Company No. 1 and as a Fire Fighter 1 volunteer. He also serves as a member of the Bucks County CAP (Community Accountability Program), David’s Mentoring/Reentry Program and an Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Eucharistic Minister. He is a native New Yorker and a graduate of City College of New York. He is an avid Sailor and resides with his wife Susan in Bucks County, PA.

Fotinos S. Panagakos, DMD, PhD
Associate Dean for Research at West Virginia University School of Dentistry

Dr. Panagakos received his DMD from UMDNJ-New Jersey Dental School (now Rutgers University School of Dental Medicine) and his PhD in Biochemistry and Molecular Biology from UMDNJ-Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences (now the Rutgers University Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences) in 1992. In 1999, he received his Master’s in Education from Seton Hall University and in 2007 he received his Master’s in Business Administration from Lehigh University.

Dr. Panagakos was commissioned out of the Lehigh University ROTC program in 1986 as a Second Lieutenant, and served for 13 years in the NJ Army National Guard and Army Reserve. He held positions as a medical platoon leader, Squadron administrative officer (S1), Medical Company commander and reserve dental office in the 82nd Airborne Division, leaving service as a Major in 1999.

Dr. Panagakos served for 14 years as a full time faculty member at New Jersey Dental School, serving in a number of administrative positions, including Group Practice Administrator, Director of Environmental Safety and Associate Dean of Academic Affairs. During this time, he also maintained a private dental practice in Westfield and Newark, NJ.

In June, 2005, Dr. Panagakos joined the Colgate Palmolive Oral Care Clinical Research Department as an Associate Director. In January, 2006, Dr. Panagakos was promoted to Director of Professional Relations and Scientific Affairs – North America. In April 2009, Dr. Panagakos was appointed Director of Clinical Research Relations and Strategy within the Research and Development division of Colgate-Palmolive Co. In November, 2012, he was promoted to Global Director of Scientific Affairs and Research Relations – Oral Care.

In November, 2017, Dr. Panagakos joined Geistlich Pharma, North America as Vice President, Scientific and Clinical Affairs, based in Princeton, NJ. He led the U.S. clinical science team activities related to the development of clinical studies, publications, and continuing to strengthen relationships with regional and national professional associations aligned with regenerative dentistry.

Dr. Panagakos joined the West Virginia University School of Dentistry in August 2018, as the Associate Dean for Research.  In January 2019, he was appointed Vice Dean for Administration and Research.  In May, 2020, he was appointed Interim Dean of the school.

Dr. Panagakos is the co-author of over 75 peer-reviewed scientific research articles and is the co-editor of three dental science textbooks. His areas of interest include the role of inflammation in oral and overall health, and the impact of nutrition on oral health and wellness.

In his spare time, Dr. Panagakos is an avid runner, having completed 55 marathons since 2012. He enjoys running races at all distances, and is currently in the process of completing a marathon in every US state.


Lawrence J. Paul, DMD
Chief Dental Officer, SKYGEN

Dr. Larry Paul is the Chief Dental Officer for SKYGEN, overseeing all aspects of the company’s dental utilization review and management activities. In his role, Dr. Paul is the clinical face of the company with a focus on using technology to empower population health-based efforts. Dr. Paul uses his clinical expertise and his experience in various roles in the industry to understand the member and provider experiences to ensure the best possible outcomes.

Prior to joining SKYGEN, he served as Vice President of Corporate Dental at AmeriHealth Caritas, a Philadelphia-based company, and prior to that as Dental Director at Keystone First, AmeriHealth Caritas’ plan in the southeast Pennsylvania market. Before that, Dr. Paul was the Dental Director at US Healthcare and the National Dental Director at its successor company, Aetna US Healthcare. He was also a consultant for the Department of Public Welfare in Pennsylvania. Dr. Paul served as a clinical dentist for 10 years before leaving for the corporate sector.

Dr. Paul earned a Doctor of Dental Surgery from Temple University Kornberg School of Dentistry and a master’s degree in science and environmental health from Temple University. He completed his general dentistry residency at the VA Hospital in Martinsburg, WV. In addition, he earned bachelor’s degrees in history and science from Penn State University. Dr. Paul serves on several boards including the board of visitors for his dental school alma mater.

Margaret Scarlett, DMD, CAPT. (ret.), USPHS, CDC
President, Scarlett Consulting International

A dentist, clinician, and author Margaret Scarlett DMD is an infectious and chronic disease prevention and policy leader. For thirty years, Dr. Scarlett has provided expert guidance as a consultant to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the World Health Organization, the Pan American Health Organization, the United States Agency for International Development, the American Red Cross and many consumer health companies. Author of CDC’s very first infection control guidelines for dentistry in 1986, she is considered an expert on infection control, leading efforts to incorporate infection control training into dental practices and dental schools for five years for CDC worldwide. As a Senior Policy Advisor to the Surgeon General for two years, she addressed policy, based on science, at HHS from 1998-2000. Retired from the US Public Health Service as a CAPTAIN (0-6) after more than twenty years, including two years in the US Army Dental Corps, Dr. Scarlett proudly served as “disease detective/epidemiologist” at CDC. During the Ebola outbreak of 2014-2015, Dr. Scarlett provided expert infection control guidance for CDC to train health workers and Public Health Service officers deployed to West Africa. Since 2005, Dr. Scarlett provides expertise and leadership to CDC on pandemic preparedness and response, working with CDC’s emergency operations center, various CDC centers and institutes, and various private and public sector partners to mitigate epidemic impact on daily life and the workplace.


Sonya G. Smith, Ed.D., J.D.
Senior Vice President for Access, Diversity and Inclusion, ADEA

Sonya Smith is the Chief Diversity Officer at the American Dental Education Association (ADEA) in Washington, DC and leads efforts to promote diversity, access, equity, belongingness, and inclusion. These efforts include the development of ADEA’s first access, diversity, and inclusion strategic framework, the inaugural faculty diversity toolkit, inaugural dental education-wide climate assessment, and health equity resources to support historically underrepresented and marginalized patients. Dr. Smith also served as the Associate Vice Chancellor for Student Affairs & Enrollment Services and Associate Professor of Pharmaceutical Sciences at the University of Tennessee Health Science Center (UTHSC). Additionally, she worked at the University of Nebraska Medical Center (UNMC), previously serving as the Associate Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs/Chief Student Affairs Officer; Associate Professor of Health Services Research Administration in the College of Public Health.

Prior to her appointment at UNMC, she served as the Associate to the President; Assistant Vice President of Academic Affairs for Diversity at the University of Nebraska Central Administration. Dr. Smith’s experiences include serving as a Public Policy Consultant for seven (7) years for the Office of the General Counsel – Tennessee Department of Finance and Administration, Tennessee Department of Health – General Counsel’s Office, and the TennCare Bureau in the areas of healthcare policy, compliance, health inequities, legislation, and access issues related to underrepresented and vulnerable populations.

Dr. Smith has published on academic freedom and free speech, diversifying the health professions, legal challenges to campus equal opportunity programs, and reducing health disparities. She serves on numerous committees such as the National Hispanic Medical Association – Health Scholars Advisory Committee, Social Mission National Advisory Committee, and the National Medical Fellowship – National Advisory Council Primary Care Leadership Program. Additionally, Dr. Smith served two terms as the Vice Chair, Health Law Section, Diversity Committee for the American Bar Association. She is a co-principal investigator for the national Summer Health Professions Education Program (SHPEP), formerly known as SMDEP. She was named an Influencer by the National Diversity Council, received the ADEA Change Agent Award, and is the recipient of the Vanderbilt Law School’s Bennett Douglas Bell Memorial Prize and Philip G. Davidson III Memorial Award. Dr. Smith holds a B.S. in History, M.Ed. in Curriculum & Instruction, and an Ed.S. in Administration & Supervision from Middle Tennessee State University. She received her doctorate in Higher Education Administration and a Doctor of Jurisprudence degree from Vanderbilt University, and completed a certificate in international law at the Tulane University Institute of European Legal Studies in Paris, France. Other certifications include: Title IX Hearing Officer, Cornell University Diversity and Inclusion; Civil Rights Investigator, and Affirmative Action Professional.

Vickie Waitsman

Vickie is the Vice President and General Counsel of DentalEZ Integrated Solutions, the manufacturer of StarDental, Ramvac, DentalEZ Equipment, Forest Dental Equipment, NevinLabs and Columbia Dentoform products. She is a native of Philadelphia and graduateof Philadelphia High School for Girls, Temple University and Temple Law School. Vickie has served on the board of directors of various oral health non-profits including the Academy of Dentistry International Foundation, Oral Health America and Kids Smiles, in addition to serving on the board of the Dr. Edward B. Shils Entrepreneurial Fund. She is a past chairman of the Dental Trade Alliance and served on its board and on the board of its Foundation. Vickie was recognized by Dental Products Reports as one of the Top Women in Dentistry.

George has had the unique experience of literally growing up in the dental trade and manufacturing business, following in his father Herb Wolfe’s footsteps, a long-time figure in the dental industry. George joined DMG America in 2002, as Director of Product Development. He launched several market-leading DMG products, as well as a completely new brand of dental hygiene materials call Kolorz. In 2007 George became President of DMG America. His goal for DMG America is continued focus on the growth of the company and the strategic development and launching of high quality innovative products. George sits on multiple industry and civic boards including, the Dental Trade Alliance Foundation, the Edward B. Shils Entrepreneurial Fund and the American Dental Assistants Association Foundation.

Jamie Pirowskin
