About the Fund

Friends and colleagues of Dr. Shils, who are also prominent leaders in the dental industry, founded the Dr. Edward B. Shils Entrepreneurial Education Fund in 2002 because they knew Dr. Shils wanted to leave a legacy of entrepreneurship.

In 2012 the Fund was renamed to the Dr. Edward B. Shils Entrepreneurial Fund, Inc. and became a registered 501(c)(3) tax-exempt organization. The Fund will continue to annually recognize outstanding entrepreneurial initiatives that educate the community at large on the impact of oral health to overall health or provide educational opportunities for those in the health care industry and profession.

Assuring the Future

Focusing on the efforts of the dental industry, the Dr. Edward B. Shils Entrepreneurial Fund, Inc. endeavors to inspire and enable new generations of dental entrepreneurs. The Fund recognizes those individuals, organizations and programs that have positively influenced the dental community and the public oral health arena. Through annual awards, the Fund honors the pioneering vision of Dr. Shils and helps to foster inspiration and initiative in current and future health care entrepreneurs.

Award Criteria

The Shils Award winners are chosen yearly and presented with a monetary prize to be given to the recipient organization of their choice. Under the auspices of the Board of Directors, nominees are sought out from all sectors of the health care community: academic, business, clinical and local public health groups. Consideration is given by the committee based upon many factors including:

  • Originality, uniqueness and creativity;
  • Breadth of impact;
  • Engagement of multiple constituencies in the dental community; and
  • Expandability and renewability.

In addition to the annual Shils Awards, the Board of Directors, at its discretion, may confer specific grants or awards to individuals, organizations and/or programs that have met the criteria judged by a representative of the Shils Fund mission.
